During the 1990’s many parents in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong sent their children to be schooled in Vancouver. Whether it was to expose their children to the English language and North American culture, as a hedge against the expiration of the Hong Kong charter, or simply to have a stake in the Vancouver housing market, parents set up their children, often lavishly, in houses, with cars and hefty allowances, and continued to live in Asia while their children grew up in Vancouver in a virtual world of their own. Produced for Rough Cuts on CBC Newsworld, filmmaker Eunice Lee explores the world of Satellite Kids and profiles two boys from Taiwan.
